Abstract: The random movement of washed out base particles in a filter and its clogging are treated as a stochastic process. Based on a queueing model, two equations are developed to determine the mean and variance of the washed out particles into a filter under steady state condition. The filter thickness is determined from the computed mean and standard deviation of the washed out particles, the number of particles retained per pore opening and the average grain size of the filter. The computed filter thickness compares well with those obtained by SILVEIRA using MARKOV CHAIN. It is observed that increasing the filter thickness beyond a limit, does not markedly increase the percentage of trapping the base particles by the filter.
