Abstract: In this study, the protection level assessment principles and protection standards for the coastal areas in Taiwan were developed. Based on the environmental characteristics of each coastal segment, risk level analysis was adopted to designate the protection level of each segment for providing references for the development of disaster prevention management. In addition, to verify the proposed assessment principles for coastal protection levels and the protection standards, and to consider various coastal characteristics and disaster types from a comprehensive perspective, this study analyzed the case of the Yunlin coastal area for providing references for the use of other coastal segments. The nonengineering measures were also proposed for integrating coastal protection.
