Abstract: The work deals with the mixing of scalars within open-channel confluences. Experiments are performed in a 90°confluence of equally wide, rectangular, horizontal channels with a high branch to upstream momentum ratio. A new method, based on p H measurement, provides 3D concentration fields throughout the flow and permits to work in closedloop without wasting water. The measurements exhibit a rapid mixing, enhanced by the presence of large-scale secondary currents. Operational numerical computations appear to be in fair agreement with the measurements and permit to gain information on the complex measured and computed 3D concentration field processes.
