Abstract: In a previous issue of Hydrolink, we discussed the contribution of marine outfall systems as part of the solutions for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and introduced general guiding principles for system design, construction, and operation. Because they convey the effluent to the ocean, outfalls are frequently (and erroneously) perceived as a pollution source. As a result, all too often the adoption of marine outfalls encounter fierce social and political resistance taking many years for their construction and implementation, preventing the affected communities from enjoying better sanitation outcomes
