Abstract: Tow important subjects must be considered in design of a reservoir's capacity. One is the operation policy which defines how reservoir's water storage should be released. Common operation policies for reservoirs are standard operating policy (SOP), S-type, SQ-type and derived policies from these methods like GSQ-type or GSQD-type. The second subject is the reliability level and deficit intensities which are allowed to occur in water demands'supplies. Effect of considering both parameters of operation policy and reliability level on a reservoir's optimum capacity is studied in this paper. Free policy, SOP, and GSQD-type policies and various reliability levels for agricultural water supplies for obtaining optimum capacity of Zhaveh dam in Iran is considered as the case study. Results show that the optimum capacity is affected more by reliability level and permissible deficit intensity rather than operation policy considered for the reservoir.
