Abstract: Coastal vegetation can act as a natural buffer zone providing protection from waves during storm. They dissipate the high energy of incoming waves by offering resistance to their forward movement through it. In the present study a numerical model was developed using the concept of wave action conservation equation to simulate the propagation and energy dissipation of waves through a beach protected with vegetation. The developed model was then validated by applying it to an experimental study of Lovas (2000). The effectiveness of vegetation in wave attenuation and in energy dissipation was quantified in terms of transmission coefficient.
