Abstract: In this study, the statistical properties of series of bed profiles are investigated in order to quantify the effect of roughness on flow resistance. Because of the irregular nature of gravel-bed profiles, the structure of these stream beds cannot be described sufficiently by a characteristic grain diameter. Therefore, the standard deviation s of the roughness heights is introduced as characteristic roughness parameter and its validity is verified by the analysis of experimental data.
