Abstract: The scalar transport phenomena in two-dimensional environmental flows are studied using the random walk method. The Lagrangian model is first applied to some idealized problems, before being refined in investigating the mixing of the flows through vegetation. The longitudinal dispersion coefficients of the shear flows, with and without vegetation, are calculated. The simulation results show high accuracy of the developed random walk method, and indicate that the refined method of including the effects of vegetation is highly efficient for all the six test cases considered. The merit of the refined random walk method is highlighted by comparing its results with those of the original random walk method.
