Cfd Study of a Spatial Submerged Hydraulic Jump

Hydraulic jumps have been extensively studied due to their practical relevance as energy dissipators below hydraulic structures. When a high-velocity conduit drains into an expanding open channel a spatial hydraulic jump is formed. Despite their common occurrence in hydraulic engineering, they have not received enough attention from researchers. Three dimensional, unsteady Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) of a symmetric spatial submerged hydraulic jump (SSHJ) is carried out at Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Windsor, Canada. In the present paper, the validation of the simulation results with experimental data is presented with pertinent discussions. A three-dimensional nature of the flow field of SSHJ captured by the present simulations is also discussed. The evolution of shear layer is studied by examining the vorticity magnitude. The paper also showcases the capabilities of DES along with volume of fluid (VOF) multiphase model to capture the flow characteristics of a spatial submerged hydraulic jump. (2630, 65, 313)
