Abstract: The magnitude and effect of vortex stretching on vortex core radius is studied experimentally and numerically in the free surface vortices that form in a scale model hydropower intake. Analysis of the inviscid flow outside the vortex core is combined with Burgers' viscous vortex model to explain and predict how gradients in the flow approaching the intake may drive the higher axial velocities observed within the vortex. The enhanced stretching estimated with this method is found to predict the measured core radius quite well over a range of vortex intensities.
