Abstract: Analysis of water temperature extremes has typically been done using event-based simulations, for example the 10-year 7-day low flows, combined with record high air temperatures. Using this combination of extreme hydrology and meteorology, one can estimate the maximum water temperature that may occur in the river. However, this method does not allow for calculation of temperature exceedence probabilities or average excursion event duration. Long-term simulation using historical and reconstructed data records provides a large database of realistic events, which can be used in power plant and reservoir operations decision making.
