Abstract: Analytical solutions for the tangential and axial velocities in a swirling turbulent pipe flow are obtained by solving the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. These equations are linearized using an order-of-magnitude analysis. The solutions to the linearized equations are obtained, and the results are compared to some previous experimental measurements. The theoretical results are in good agreement with experiments, especially for weak swirl. This analysis is the first to analytically predict the effect of swirl on the axial velocity in a pipe.
