Abstract: Irrigation has been practiced for over 6000 years. Irrigated agriculture has provided stable food supplies that enabled civilizations to grow and flourish. Today, over 220 million hectares of land are irrigated worldwide (Hoffman et al., 1990). In some countries, a large portion of the cultivated land is irrigated and large populations are heavily dependent on its production (Table 1). About 70% of irrigated land is in developing countries.
