Abstract: The low outlet capacity of the Jandula Dam Spillway has been a historic problem due to the modification of the initial design during its construction and the lowering of the spillway crests due to the flood events of 1961. The present study defines a solution based on the theoretical behaviour of submerged spillways and many 3D models executed with SPHERIMENTAL. The main issue identified is the low capacity of the critical section in the transition between the troughs and the chutes, therefore the solution is based on the floor lowering of the spillway. To evacuate the design flood of 1300 m3/s the needed floor lowering was defined in 2,5 m for the tunnel and 3 m for the channel. Finally, a physical model with a reduced scale of 1:50 was built to confirm the theoretical behaviour and the results of the 3D models.
