Abstract: Quelimane is a coastal city in Mozambique exposed to cyclones, flooding, erosion and fast urbanization due to rural migration. The city lies in the province of Zambezia, Mozambique, close to the River Dos Bons Sinais and approximately 20 kilometers inland from the Indian Ocean. The influx of people from rural areas resulted in informal settlements, increased deforestation of mangroves and unplanned use of land in parts of the municipality that were or became vulnerable to flooding and storm surges. This study aims at providing a holistic understanding of the complex interplay between environmental factors, territorial features, urban and land use planning. The main outcome of the project is to showcase the potential positive impacts that scaling up local low-cost solutions may have in improving resilience to climate changes in a fast-changing social context.
