Abstract: Paricular imporrance is attached to flood control in the valleys and forelands of the Alps, and thus in Austria in general. Flood retention is if possible the preferred method of flood protection. Two topics are discussed: Firstly, flood retention basins, usually with minor catchment areas and exreme flood flows, which are mainly found along the border of the Alps; some details are outlined. Secondly, the protecrion effect through major reseroirs in exisring hydropower plants; and the improvement of the flood protection afforded by minor reservoirs through adequate operation.
