Abstract: In most developed and developing countries much of the existing infrastructurehas been located along the river valleys.Proximity to water has been arequirement for civilisation as we know it today.Water has been used notonly for providing the basic water supply but also for many aspects whichallow modern commerce to flourish:for many centuries water power has providedthe driving force to industry;water transport has been and is still veryimportant to economic prosperity;flowing water is used to dilute and dispersemany of the domestic and industrial wastes of modern cities;the flat floodplains adjacent to the rivers have become prime sites for industrialdevelopment;in more recent times the area around the waterways have becomeattractive areas in which to live and the waterways themselves have become thecentre for the recreation.
