Abstract: Calculations of velocities in a flow over a sill were made with a two-dimensional numerical model. The geometry of the bottom profile, the roughness length and the Froude number were varied. In these situations the water levels, obtained by means of the one-dimensional shallow water equations, deviate from the water levels, obtained by means of the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes and continuity equations. The shallow water equations were modified by means of added coefficients in some terms which were calculated from the velocities obtained from the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes and continuity equations. Good agreement exists between the water levels calculated with these modified shallow water equations and those calculated with the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes and continuity equations.
