Abstract: The time varying distribution of particulate matter in a lake is the result of a complex set ofphysical, chemical and biological processes and their mutual interactions. The timescales associatedwith the processes cover an enormous range varying from milliseconds,in the_case ofphotosynthetic reactions,to months or even years for the settling of finest fractions. From theperspective of seeking to describe particle distributions in a lake,it is essential that the interactionbetween the particles and the physical mixing processes be explicitly represented at time scalesappropriate to these mixing processes.
