Abstract: A main objective of a surge tank placed in an hydraulic circuit is to prevent thetransmission of pressure elastic waves to a long low pressure gallery,tunnel or pipelinethat must protected against the waterhammer effects.These waves can be originated byflow variations in an hydroelectric powerplant(with·turbines or pump-turbines),inpumping plant(with pumps)or in a flow control structure(with flow control valves).
