Abstract: A probabilistic mathematical model of an air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASHC) is described in th is paper. The ASHC is used as a separator in mineral processing, and effectively combines the selectivity of flotation w ith the high capacity and simplicity of hydrocyclones. The model, developed as part of a U. S. Bureau of Mines program to optimize ASHC performance, allow s for a better understanding of the separating power of the ASHC by predicting recovery based on the physical phenomena occurring in the device. This model should eventually lead to an optimized ASHC design.
