Abstract: The effect of bottom shear stresses on quasi 2-D circulating flows is investigated numerically using a depth-averaged stream function-vorticity formulation. Circulting flow rates in a square basin for shallow to deep water depths are calculated. In the limiting case for a deep water depth, the model produces the known result of the two dimensional flow in a square cavity. In the case for a shallow water depth and for moderately small Reynolds number, the circulating flow rate is found to be independent of the horizontal length scale of the basin.
