Abstract: The industrial revolution and associated urbanization bringsrapid development of the urban storm drainage systems with dualpurposes of flood and pollution controls [1].Unfortunately,manyexisting storm or combined sewer systems have not fulfilled thedesignated purposes, and overflow occurred which caused basementflooding, street flooding and pollution to receiving waters.Someefforts [2]have been made to model this phenomenon based on thetransient flow principles. In addition to the overflow problem, many cities have also experienced geyser phenomenon.Occurrence ofthe geyser,an intermittent fountainlike jet of air-water-sewagemixture into the air,has often resulted in loss of manhole ordropshaft cover, structural damages, personal injuries, streetpollution and flooding. This paper intends to reveal reasons forthis high water jet through numerical, analytical studies andprototype verification.
