Abstract: Impact pressures on both horizontal and vertical plates were investigated experimentally in a laboratory flume. Pressure measurements, coupled with visual observations using video techniques, provided an insight into the impact loading mechanism, the effects of air entrainment and the magnitude of the high impact pressures. Pressures induced by periodic regular waves on a horizontal plate and steep overturning waves on a vertical plate were measured. In both cases the three dimensional nature of the problem was highlighted indicating the dependence of the results on the transverse characteristics of both the structure and the breaking wave.
