Abstract: The use of HF Radar for mapping near-shore surface currents has developedrapidly in the last 5 years. The UK's OSCR(Ocean Surface Current Radar)systemhas progressed from initial trials in'83,through comprehensive evaluationexercises in(84 and'85-including comparisons against moored current meters, and drifting buoys and detailed numerical models-to what are now consideredroutine coastal surveys for offshore engineering design purposes. Here thetechnical basis of the system is reviewed, the many evaluation techniquessummarised and results presented from a series of recent deployments concernedwith the location of off-shore discharge locations.
