Abstract: The oscillatory flow over a rippled bed has been determined and the dynamics of the vortical structures generated by flow separation at ripple crests is described. Sediments picked up during a wave cycle are followed. The basis for a quantitative description of onshore-offshore sediment transport associated with the presence of ripples are laid down. The assumption of laminar flow limits the analysis for values of the Stokes layer Reynolds number Rδ smaller than a critical value (Rδ) c for which turbulence appears. The present approach can be extended to the turbulent case by employing an appropriate turbulence scheme.
