Abstract: The motion of the free surface or phreatic surface in a rubblemound breakwatercan yield insight into the internal hydraulic stability of the structure.Recent failure of several large breakwaters has resulted in a realization thatbreakwater designers must give as much consideration to the internal hydraulicstability of a breakwater as is given to the hydraulic stability of the outerarmour layer.
