Abstract: The phenomenon of vortex shedding from bluff bodies submerged in un iform viscous flow and the resultant unsteady hydrodynamic forces are simulated using a computer model based on the solution of the ensemble-averaged Navie r-Stokes equations. The predicted results are compared with experimental data for various body shapes with generally good agreement. Shortcomings in conventional turbulence models, when applied to periodic flows, are identified. A simple modification to improve the performance of a two-equation model is proposed and tested.
