Abstract: Theory for the formation of sand waves in open channel is presented by using the potential flow over a permeable bed. The phase lag between the water surface profile and the bed form is expressed by the function of a Reynoldd number based on the intrinsic permeability of the porous media and the wave number of the bed form. The theory also can explain the generation of antidunes migrating downstream. The result is in good agreement with the observed data.
