Abstract: The paper renders evident general relations illustrating the dependence of the maaimum depth of local scour around bridge piers on the main parameters which define the flou, the channel geometry, the pier geometry and the sediment material. Consideration is given to the eimilarity betueen the scour occurring in free surface uater currents and that produced by pres-surized air currents.
