Abstract: It is explained that computational hydraulics and modelling cannot be regarded as synonymous if computational hydraulics is to be regarded as scientific. The relation of computational hydraulic studies to such pre-scientific considerations as those of time, space, number and extremum are introduced. The inevitability of paradoxes in the subject is then explained.
