Abstract: Analytical solutions are presented for determining the location and thickness of the interface betw een the freshwater lens and underlying salt water on ocean islands and atolls. The dispersion zone is treated as a mixing layer of finite width ov er which the fluid properties change from those of fresh water to those of sea water. The Dupuit-Forchheimer assumptions are used to give the hypothetical sharp interface location since the slope of this interface is required to obtain the mixing layer widt h. The solutions are utilized to investigate the influence of different pumping patterns on the lens thickness and therefore on its ability to produce the volumes of water required.
