Numerical Simulation of Flow Around Objects--Are Super-Com Puters the Answer?

Abstract: In the era of offshore technology the reliable determination and prediction of forces exerted on struc- tural components by currents and waves is of great importance. As quantitative results obtained from hydraulic model tests can usually not be generalized to cover the natural environment various complex mathemat ical-numerical procedures for the simulation of flow around objects have been developed during the last few years. Unfortunately, it soon turned out that the computing times required for the most sophisticated and accurate models almost completely rule out any practical applications. With one of the potential flow approaches as a typical example the paper investigates to what extent super- fast computers could still render possible the utilization of those models avoiding the alternative simplifications that would severely reduce accuracy and physical plausibility of the results.
