Abstract: Experiments on uns teady flow past a sudden expansion in an open channel are described. To simulate tidal flow half a tidal cycle was performed by means of half a sinusoidal func tion. Laser -Doppler velocimetry was used to measure the time-dependent velocities. By means of condi tional sampling mean velocities and turbulence characteristics such as intensities, Reynolds stresses, turbulence energy and power spectra were calculated. A first comparison is made between the results of a 2-D numerical model for nearly- horizontal flow and the exper iments.
