Abstract: This paper deals with the measurement of velocity distribution over the width of a rectangular open channel by the use of the Laser Doppler Anemometer. The non-uniform velocity distribution over the width is theoretically considered to be symmetric to the longitudinal axis in the midstream of the flow in a straight channel. A theoretica1 expression based on this concept was developed to describe the velocity distribution over the width of a channel. The velocity measurements obtained at different depths in the flow over the width of a channel by the use of the Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA) were compared with the theoretica1 results at seven different cross-sections of a 'U' shaped channel. Isovels of the velocity distribution at each of these cross-sections are also presented in order to show the existence of an unstable or agitated motion near the outer wall of the curved channe1 and its effects in a natural water course.
