Abstract: An experimental investigation was undertaken to determine the virtual mass coefficients for different arrays of structure units, e. g., cylindrical pile arrays, multiple cylindrical arrays, Dolos units and river gravel. It was concluded that both the drag coefficients and the virtual mass coefficients must be determined as functions of the acceleration history. A microcomputer was used for on-line data acquisition and analysis. Values for the unsteady drag and virtual mass coefficients are suggested for the different tested media.
