Abstract: The present paper summarises available methods of measurement and generation of directional waves in laboratory wave basins. The Fourier representation of such waves is described. Emphasis is given to a description of two methods of directional wave generation. One is based on the snake principle, and the other, which is still under development, is based on the diffraction princip1e. Preliminary results using the method based on the diffraction principle indicate that it should provide quite realistic results.
