Abstract: Head-discharge relations for circular pipe and box culverts are derived and compared with published design procedures. The relations are all of similar form. The main classifications of culvert flow are inlet control with inlet not submerged, inlet control with inlet submerged and outlet control. Of these, inlet control governs in the great majority of cases. Generalised equations are presented for the head-discharge relation under inlet control.
