Abstract: Scour holes formed by the interaction between flow, pier structure, and sediment transport is identified as one of the main cause for bridge failures worldwide. This interaction is complex and highly three-dimensional (3D), however scouring around bridges is commonly evaluated using empirical equations. In here, we investigate the scour development using a 3D numerical model with an hybrid RANS-LES turbulence model and a movable bed. An experiment from the literature (Chiew et al. ) is selected to quantitatively evaluate the capabilities of the 3D model and to investigate the effect of sediment mobility in the formation of scour holes. The results of the simulations were compared with those obtained from empirical equations and the experiments.
