Abstract: The rising of Shallow Water Tables (SWT) levels in urban areas worsens geotechnical and environmental problems. For that, this study evaluates bioengineering and hydropedological methods to mitigate SWT levels. By using sand tank experiments and field-scale studies, various techniques to lower SWT levels were tested: evapotranspiration by Reeds, evaporation from bare soil, and evaporative “soil siphoning” with moisture chimneys. The study concludes that bioengineering with phreatophytic reeds and engineered soil structures can significantly decrease SWT levels.
