Two-Dimensional Numerical Simulations for Bed Morphology Under the Constraint of Fixed Channel Widths

Abstract: When installing hydraulic structures for river restoration, the assessments usually concentrates on flow and water level, without taking into account the morphological characteristics of the river. This study uses a 2-D numerical model to examine how channel width constraints impact morphological changes. The results indicate that as the width of the channel increases, the wetted width and active width decrease. The active width in braided channels typically ranges from 20% to 40% of the total wetted width. A sharp increase in the Braiding Index (BI) and Active Braiding Index (ABI) implies the transition from a single-thread channel to a braided channel when the dimensionless stream power falls below a critical threshold, resulting in a more complex channel structure. The numerical results are consistent with the results of previous experimental data. Variations in channel width have a notable impact on the shape and stability of rivers. These results can offer valuable insights for river restoration and management practices to adjust width.
