Keywords: CFD confluence two-phase flow supercritical flow turbulent flow

Abstract: The paper presents a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation of supercritical free-water-surface flow at the confluence, where turbulent, complex, non-stationary flow occurs. Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) measurements of the free-water-surface topography were used to validate CFD simulations tested with different turbulence and multiphase models under high Reynolds (up to 105) and Froude (up to 10) numbers. The CFD results agreed well with the experimental data, although larger deviations were observed at higher Froude numbers due to non-linear wave behaviour. The study demonstrates the applicability and capability of CFD for the design of open channel confluences.
