Vortex Scouring Process Around a Vertical Pile Varying Shapes and Flow Regimes

Abstract: This study aims to examine the scour process around a vertical pile with various shapes, utilizing numerical methods and considering both clear-water and live-bed conditions. The focus is placed on the scour dynamics with respect to channel confinement. Two configurations are explored: a wide and a narrow channel with a fixed-size pile. Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is employed to capture the turbulent flows around the piles. The hydrodynamics are modeled using the Navier–Stokes equations in σ coordinates, while bed evolution is governed by the Exner-Polya equation. The resolution of these equations utilizes a second-order unstructured finite-volume technique, which achieves second-order precision in both time and space. . The model is validated against experimental and numerical results from existing literature. Once validated, it is applied to an extensive study to deepen our understanding of the factors affecting the vortex scouring process. Findings indicate that the shape of the pile influences scour depth differently under both flow conditions.
