Abstract: Water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) are increasingly challenged to meet stringent effluent quality standards whilst reducing their energy consumption and carbon footprint. Demand response (DR) activities support the energy grid during peak times and offer economic benefits. However, their widespread adoption is limited by the complexity of their implementation in WRRFs. This research proposes an open-source digital twin framework (DiWaTT) for demand-side management to facilitate DR operations in WRRFs. In this proof of concept, we describe the key components of DiWaTT, explain their rationale, and discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with its application in real plants. We anticipate that such open and FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) tools will facilitate the sharing of insights between WRRFs and the coordination of energy management practices towards a low-carbon future.
