Abstract: Accurate estimation of the scour depth and pattern around piers is essential for predicting the state of the riverbed during floods and estimation of its effect on the safety of bridges. This study conducted clear water scour experiments next to the bridge piers protected with riprap sloping structure, aiming to investigate the temporal change in the near-bed flow field during the scour development from the undisturbed bed until the equilibrium scour state. The flow data was measured using the ADVP in the near-bed region downstream of the bridge pier. The measured data was analyzed through flow velocity, Reynolds shear stress, and turbulent kinetic energy pattern for different time steps. The results show that there is a distinct relationship between the scour hole development and the Reynolds shear stress pattern that can be used to predict the deposition of the material eroded from the scour hole.
