Abstract: Despite the importance of free-surface fluctuations in rivers, many questions as to their nature and formation mechanisms remain unanswered. In this study, we make use of confocal chromatic distance sensors to assess free-surface fluctuations in an open-channel flume that has been optimised for this purpose. Our data show that the amplitude of free-surface fluctuations over a range of flow conditions scale with bed shear stress, and that surface fluctuations develop along the channel in a similar way to turbulent velocity fluctuations.
