Abstract: The occurrence of pressure flow under a bridge deck due to its submergence is a very common phenomenon during high flood events. Recently, the frequency of such events has been increased due to climate change. The flow hydrodynamics under pressure flow conditions can significantly differ from open flow conditions. As the present status of bridge design is based on the open flow condition, it became essential to investigate the hydrodynamic and scour characteristics under the pressure flow conditions which can be helpful in revising our design standard for the bridge considering the pressure flow during a high flood event. This study experimentally investigated the effect of contraction length (deck length) on flow pattern and vortex strength under pressure flow conditions. Further, the equilibrium scour depth was also investigated under pressure flow conditions. The results of the study showed that vortex strength and scour depth reduced with an increase in contraction length.
