Abstract: Index velocity method (IVM) is a technique for calculating continuous flow discharge using relationship between mean velocity and index velocity, which can be measured using various devices. As the use of non-contact type velocity meter has increased recently, a lot of research on discharge calculation using surface velocity is being conducted. In IVM, it is very important whether the index velocity can represent the flow condition of the cross-section and has a correlation with the mean velocity for various flow conditions. Therefore, in this study, a surface velocity meter consisting of multi-line was installed in river, and the appropriate position of the index velocity was examined from the surface velocity profiles. As a result of analyzing the correlation and trend with the mean velocity of each point using the surface velocity profiles measured in the test site, the surface velocity near the core flow was found to be the best, and the relative error of the discharge result by the index velocity method using this relationship was found to be very accurate, within 5%.
