Abstract: When taking images or videos using drones to measure something in remote sensing or photogrammetry fields, it is necessary to use ground control points to know exact locations on images. However, for large rivers, using standard ground control points is often impractical. This study aims to use only GPS data and drone-captured images to extract the flow discharge at a designated absolute position. Using GPS data, the moving direction of the drone and that of the captured images were calculated, converting each image point into a physical Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) coordinate system. After determining the range of observation by selecting the start and end frames, all images of the measurement cross-section were divided into reference frames (measurement subsections) and the flow discharge was calculated using spatio-temporal volume obtained by gathering images over 1 sec (30 frames) for all measurement subsections. Applying the velocity-area method with the given cross-sectional area, the flow discharge of the river with an easy and safe manner.
