Abstract: The effects of filter barriers on bedload transport in alpine rivers are of crucial importance for the understanding of processes, the planning of construction measures and the analysis of flood events. The FEMMOS project (Sediment Monitoring and Management on the Upper Salzach) is primarily concerned with the investigation of bedload processes in the Habach. The aim is to improve the understanding of bedload transport and to evaluate the effectiveness of the protection dam through comprehensive measurements. The protection dam is instrumented with several advanced measurement systems, including 14 plate geophones, a fixed slot sampler, a mobile bedload sampler, a pressure gauge, a surface radar, a turbidity sensor, three LiDAR sensors and six high resolution cameras. These systems were used to collect detailed data on bedload transport and the retention effect of the filter barrier. Preliminary results show that the instrumentation allows successful monitoring of sedimentation and desedimentation processes and that it is possible to quantify bedload transport volumes. It is planned to further calibrate the geophone system and to use the data on the influence of the Habach on the entire Upper Salzach system to develop an effective sediment management concept. Overall, the study has provided important insights into the effect of protection dams on bedload transport and sediment availability in alpine waters.
